Most Brands Should
Choose Shopify
Shopify is the right choice for most South African merchants. WooCommerce is the right choice for a specific set of businesses, and for those businesses it is not close. Here is how to tell which one you are.
Choose Shopify if you want to sell quickly, keep operations simple, and never think about servers, updates or security. It suits most retail and direct-to-consumer brands.
Choose WooCommerce if you need control the hosted platform will not give you: custom checkout logic, wholesale pricing tiers, unusual fulfilment rules, or a product category a hosted platform’s policies exclude.
How They
Actually Differ
| Shopify | WooCommerce | |
|---|---|---|
| Model | Hosted SaaS | Self-hosted, open source |
| Platform fee | Monthly subscription in USD | None — you pay hosting instead |
| Hosting & security | Included and managed | Your responsibility |
| Updates & patching | Automatic | Manual and ongoing |
| Setup speed | Faster | Slower |
| Customisation | Within platform limits | Effectively unlimited |
| Checkout control | Limited unless on Plus | Full control |
| Restricted products | Governed by acceptable use policy | Governed by your gateway and the law |
| Ownership | Store lives on Shopify | You own the whole stack |
| Ongoing cost | Predictable subscription | Hosting, licences and maintenance |
What Each One
Really Costs
Shopify’s cost is predictable and denominated in dollars, which means it moves with the rand. App subscriptions add up quietly, and merchants routinely underestimate this. Budget for the apps, not just the plan.
WooCommerce has no platform fee, which is why it gets sold as the cheaper option. It usually is not. You pay for hosting, premium plugin licences that renew annually, and maintenance. On a serious store that tends to land somewhere in the region of R10,000 to R20,000 a year before anyone touches the code.
The build cost is higher on WooCommerce too, because functionality Shopify ships as standard has to be assembled. What you are buying with that money is control, not savings.
Payments and
Couriers
Both platforms integrate with the South African ecosystem. PayFast, Peach Payments, Yoco and Ozow all support both, as do The Courier Guy, Bob Go and Aramex.
The difference is not availability, it is approval. Your product category and business model determine whether a gateway will underwrite you, and that decision belongs to the gateway regardless of which platform you build on. Confirm eligibility before you commit to a build, not after.
Two Situations That
Remove the Decision
Restricted product categories
Hosted platforms enforce global acceptable use policies that do not bend for local legality. A product that is lawful to sell in South Africa can still be prohibited by the platform, and when that happens the store comes down with little notice. Self-hosting removes that exposure. It does not remove your obligation to comply with South African law or to satisfy your payment provider.
Complex commercial logic
Wholesale and retail from one catalogue, customer-group pricing, approval-gated registration, location-based fulfilment, or a checkout that has to behave differently by product type. These are possible on Shopify at the Plus tier and straightforward on WooCommerce at any tier.
Where Shopify
Wins Outright
Speed to launch. Lower total cost of ownership for a standard store. Security and PCI compliance handled for you. A mature app ecosystem. Nothing to maintain.
If your store is conventional retail and none of the constraints above apply, Shopify is the better commercial decision and we will tell you so. We are a Shopify Partner, and most of what we build is on Shopify for exactly this reason.
Can You Move
Once You’ve Chosen?
Yes, in both directions, and we handle both. A migration covers products and variants, customers and order history, media, URL mapping and 301 redirects, metadata, analytics and Search Console.
The part that goes wrong when it is done badly is SEO. Redirect mapping is the whole job, not a final step. See WooCommerce to Shopify migration or WooCommerce development depending on which way you are heading.
Common
Questions
Is WooCommerce cheaper than Shopify?
Usually not. There is no platform subscription, but hosting, licences and maintenance typically exceed a Shopify plan on a store of any size.
Is WooCommerce less secure?
Not inherently. It is less secure when it is left unmaintained, which is a different problem and a solvable one.
Can I sell restricted products on Shopify in South Africa?
It depends on the category, and the platform’s global policy applies regardless of local law. Check before you build, not after.
Which is better for SEO?
Neither, at the platform level. Structure, speed and content decide it. The real SEO risk is a badly executed migration between the two.
Do you build on both?
Yes. We are a Shopify Partner and we build and maintain WooCommerce stores, so we have no commercial reason to push you toward either one.
